Men Celebrating Women in Valparaíso
On the morning March 8, 2012, Aleszu I stopped a local woman in Valparaíso to ask for directions. ”Feliz Día internacional de la Mujer!” she exclaimed, before giving me a kiss on the cheek. I had never heard of International Women’s Day before, but every man and woman I interacted with in Valparaíso on March 8, including a male security guard and a child on the street wished me a happy one.
This group of men was performing a roving piece of abstract theater around the cerros of the city in honor of International Women’s Day.

This small construction crew was building an apartment complex on the cerro overlooking the Pacific in Valparaíso, Chile. With all the advancements in modern building technology and design, it still requires the grit, sweat, care and problem solving of a human to erect a structure on a cliffside that blends seamlessly into the dense, dynamic existing urban fabric of an old, vertical city like Valparaíso.

All of the streets in Valparaíso were being dug up to place new water lines and being reconstructed with beautiful hand laid cobblestones, arranged one by one into a perfect puzzle.

Valparaíso feels like Prague must have felt 20 years ago. Enchanting, bohemian, safe enough to enjoy, and still relatively cheap. But posh new hotels are popping up around the city every day the secret is getting out. This mansion on a vista is being converted into a boutique hotel.
