We never made it to Peninsula Valdes for financial reasons ($100USD just to take a gamble on catching a glimpse of marine wildlife?), and headed to Punta Ninfas instead, a beach that is supposed to be great for getting close to elephant seals, about a 1.5 hour drive out of town.
There was a steep climb down to the beach, and although there were no elephant seals, I nearly tripped over a penguin! It was chick, sporting grey, fuzzy down instead of slick, inky feathers like the fully developed adults. This little guy was far from his colony and all alone on a beach where he was not supposed to be. He let me get very close to him, and after snapping dozens of photos of the poor guy, I noticed that he was bleeding near his feet.
